The International Workshop ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGY: Challenges and Opportunities from Bio And Nanotechnology has culminated successfully
The FEALAC -Cbionano International workshop Environment and Energy: Challenges and Opportunities from Bio and Nanotechnology was co-hosted in Bogotá Colombia on March 9-10 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Presidential Agency of International Cooperation (APC-Colombia), the Administrative Department of Science, Technology and Innovation – COLCIENCIAS -, Colombian Association for the Advancement of Science ACAC, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and Universidad de los Andes. Over 350 participants from Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, el Salvador, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Panamá, Perú, México, Tailandia, Venezuela, Vietnam attended the workshop.
Attendend the opening ceremony and delivered speeches: Dra. Consuelo Uribe, Vice Chancellor for Research Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Dra. Helena Groot, Vice President of Colombian Association for the Advancement of Science -ACAC, Dr. Oscar Gualdrón González Director of Development Research of COLCIENCIAS, Dr. Enrique Mauri Londoño Director of International Cooperation Offer APC-Colombia, Dra. María Andrea Albán Durán, Director of the International Cooperation Agency, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Presentation about the topics and roadmap for the development of cooperation projects, by the Cbionano Network Coordinator Dr. Edgar E. González was conducted.
From the contributions of international and national speakers, as well as sessions of the working groups, among others, the following actions were agreed:
1. In a short time, -in a six-month period- to formulate two international cooperation projects among FEALAC countries. These projects will be focused on heavy metal pollution in water and biorefineries. Specific topics: Mapping of contamination and risk by heavy metals in the regions of FEALAC. Development of a bio nanostructured system for remediation of contaminated water by heavy metals and sustainable use of resources like biomass for clean energy production. The main methodological aspects and recommendations for the development of the projects were agreed.
2. Facilitate the articulation with knowledge networks and institutions of Forum for East Asia- Latin American Co-operation FEALAC countries to strengthen the execution of cooperation projects. Already were identified some networks and institutions with which this task will start immediately.
3. Conformation of a Technical and Scientific Committee responsible for the preparation of cooperation projects. In coming months, the book “Nanotechnology and biotechnology for sustainable environmental remediation and energy generation” will be published. This publication contains the topics covered in the workshop and will socialize on the problem of energy and water contamination by heavy metals.
The next issue of the Journal Nano Science and Technology will be dedicated to the subject treated in the workshop: Contamination by heavy metals and biorefineries. In this issue the initiative of FEALAC-Cbionano will be supported.
